December 7, 2004 Putnam Rotarians presented a check today to Literacy Volunteers of Putnam County, an adult reading program which provides one-on-one tutorial instruction to some forty or so clients at any given time. Tutors are trained volunteers from the Putnam community. Teaching strategies range from phonics-based instruction to whole language learning in contest. English is a second language for many students who are new to the area. Literacy Volunteers helps improve conversational English and cultural adjustments as needed. The Literacy Volunteers of Putnam operate out of an office in the main county library. The literacy gift today was funded by "happy dollars," voluntary contributions which have become a tradition with local Rotarians. At their weekly luncheons, members celebrate anniversaries, new children and grandchildren, birthdays, ar even "a beautiful day" with dollar donations for a community charity. Putnam Rotary has assisted the literacy group in other ways. The Club recently provided the organization with a new computer for its office.
The Putnam Rotary meets at noon every Tuesday
