Dollar General gives dollars for literacy June 21, 2005 Dollar General in Putnam Village of Teays Valley has given $1,900 to Literacy Volunteers of Putnam. Acting Manager Alvin Clark presented a check for the grant award to Dr. Nye Clinton (President of the Literacy Board) and Peggy Melton (Director). The grant by Dollar General through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will be used in the purchase of literacy materials and reading supplies for the volunteer group. Included will be "Way to Read" and "Challenger," two sets of readers by the Laubach reading program. Since 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has increased the functional literacy of adults by providing grants to non-profit organizations dedicated to the advancement of literacy. The Foundation has awarded $1,798,633 in grants to 234 non-profit organizations across the company’s 30-state market area. Grants were awarded to non-profit organizations that provide instructional services in one of the following literacy areas: adult basic education, GED preparation, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), family literacy or workforce literacy initiatives. One out of four adults in the United States reads at or below the fifth-grade proficiency level. In Putnam County approximately fourteen percent of the adult population reads at a level such that everyday tasks are extremely difficult. In addition, Putnam Couynty has a growing number of immigrant residents who speak little or no English. Dollar General, through its support, helps the Literacy Volunteers bring those numbers down.
