The grant today represents continuing support by State Farm for adult literacy in the region.
Literacy has been a continuing project for support by Putnam Rotary and its members. As part of a project among the 31 clubs in southern West Virginia, Rotary has provided literacy students with personal dictionaries.
Operating at the Putnam Career & Technical Center with an office in the Putnam main library, the Literacy Volunteers number about 45 tutors who serve without compensation to offer one-on-one instruction on request to adults who are unable to read above the fifth-grade level.
Many of the literacy clients in recent years are new residents in the area for whom English is not their native language.
The award today by State Farm accompanied a club grant of "Happy Dollars" from Putnam Rotary.
Herman Dixon is a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest recognition awarded by Rotary International.
